Please note that all our courses, events, trips, course-related activities, clinics, seminars, and lodge stays have forms for you to give feedback when you participate. You’ll get an email reminder to do so just after the activity. If your feedback is of urgent nature it may be best to contact the chair of the committee that sponsors that program directly. Not sure who the chair is? Visit our Committee Chair Directory or contact our Member Services Team at info@mountaineers.org.

If there was a safety incident or near miss, you will have the opportunity for submitting an Incident Report after submitting activity feedback. You may also use the Incident Report button on the activity detail page (from your My Activities page) or contact our Safety Committee directly at safety@mountaineers.org.

  1. Ability to hide climbs for specific SIG's or Branches.

Let climb leads be able to hide climbs from the public until they are done getting members from their SIG or branch.

As a basic student its time consuming to see climbs just to sign up or email the climb leader and find out its only for a specific group of people and that I can't be on the climb.

  2. Ability to see 'what trips i have done with this person'

It would be great if I could look up a person, and see the trips i've done with them in the past, along with their badges. So many times, we end up playing the 'i've been out with you somewhere. were you on my Norse Peak trip? no? may be on Snoqualmie last year then?' :)

You can now see badge assigned and expiration dates when you “mouse over” the badge on your My Profile page.

  4. Gift Certificates, Gift Cards, Store Credit SD308

Set up a system where people can purchase and give electronic gift certificates that are good for books, merchandise, course and activities. Gift certificates issues in whole dollar amounts. Offer a few suggestions like ($25, $50, $100). Have the giver specify and email address of the recipient. Allow the recipient to add the gift certificate to their account (require them to create an account if needed).

  5. Publicly accessible API

As a member of the Mountaineers, I'd love to give back in a way that I have particular expertise.

It would be great of the website had a public facing REST API for exposing data such as events and classes.

At least in a read capacity. My particular goal would be to write an Android (and possibly iOS) app to browse the events and what not.

It would be great to have easy native access to my up coming events, and be able to launch navigation to the event right from the app.

I have extensive experience writing and working…

We receive a lot of offers from IT folks offering to help, particularly folks with development experience. While we appreciate it, our website is not terribly complicated but is incredibly specific to our organization. To effectively play in that space, someone needs to be both a master of our technology stack AND have a detailed and nuanced understanding of the interplay between volunteer needs, user behaviors, and how the backend systems sync and impact each other.

For that reason, we have chosen to hire staff to run our IT needs even though we have volunteers who could do it, just as we have chosen to hire a CEO even though we have volunteers with executive leadership experience.

We also discussed the idea of giving a technology committee access to our GitHub and developers to support development, or find another way to get volunteers involved “since their time is free”. And…

  6. Add Message Board/Forum Capability

Would be great to have a space where leaders could put up an activity idea and find out if other leaders might be interested in joining up for key swaps, car camps, etc. Leaders could ask for anyone's recent experience with a particular trail or trailhead. On the same space, members could put up a trip that they'd like to do and see if they can interest a leader in doing it; barring that, to find other members who might like to do it privately.

Note that significant discovery is needed to determine our needs and wants for form/message board capbility and where to integrate it into our website (e.g. general message boards, carpooling to activities and events, courses, committees).

  7. My Calendar SD411

Add a "My Calendar" page where I can see all of my activities on a calendar, or subscribe to an iCal feed of my activities.

    Update April 2018
We are "cancelling" this for lack of a better status, because each of the items below is its own idea, and some are complete. Please visit the individual items to vote for or subscribe to them. Thanks!

    Update April 26 2016
Thanks to everyone who took the leader survey. The calendar requests with the most votes are below.

  8. Track Leaders, Instructors and Members better on Committee Rosters including Automatically Assigning Leader Badges SD134/SD580

Right now you are added as a leader to a committee and Member Services gets an email notification that requires them to add the badge. Leader web rights however are instantly granted with the addition to the roster.

Expiration dates for each, automatic leader/instructor badge assignment/removal, roster removal if none remain. Add committee member checkbox. Bulk update tools for managing roles/expiration dates. Determine what an instructor really is.

  9. Feature Request - Expiring Badge Notification ~SFOnly

As a user I would like to be notified prior to my badge expiring so that I can arrange to meet requirements or arrange for an extension given that I have a badge that has an expiration date. The problem to avoid is people losing their privileges without notice and being unpleasantly surprised.

Then, when the expiration date is within 90 and 30 days from expiring:

    • A notification of what badge is about to expire and when will be sent to me (User) 90 days and 30 days prior to the expiration date.

    • A notification will be sent to the…

  10. Make Peak Pins and other awards more public and interactive on the website

Make Peak Pin and Paddle pins public on the website so members can see all of the neat awards their fellow members have completed and/or are working on. Plus we need to have good descriptions of the requirements for each of the awards.

We just completed editing and publishing the award badges that existed on our old website. They are at Membership > Badges, https://www.mountaineers.org/membership/badges/award-peak-pin-badges.

There are two for which we need badge images. We should have those by the end of March.

We’ll next work on adding badges; including content, images and roster; for our organization and branch service awards. We do not yet have this scheduled.

Please take a look and let us know if you have any questions or find anything that needs corrected.

Thanks to all you helped us get these done!

  11. Measure what we care about at the member, committee, and branch levels. SD317

There are a number of statistical and reporting needs and desires that many people spend a great deal of time trying to capture. I would like to see us develop metrics and create "dashboards" that automate this data collection and allow us to quickly identify trends in the data that help us plan for the most successful future. For example:

Branches and Committees often want to know (or would be interested in): # of Leaders, # of trips being posted, % of closed out trips, #of courses offered, # of students in courses, # of participants on trips sponsored by…

    Completed Final Part Jun 2018

The final piece we want to have available is aggregate committee leader feedback. This feedback allows committee admins to enter an activity or course start date and see all feedback for that outing in one place. It also allows committee admins to quickly see Leader feedback in one place.

We currently have monthly dashboards being sent to each branch with information about the number of trips, courses and membership information.

We also have the member services team pulling trip statistics and additional committee reporting via requests to info@mountaineers.org. We strive for a 48 business hour turnaround on these requests.

  12. In-Person Book Pick-up SD341

Create an online purchase option for shoppers to pick up a book at the Seattle Program Center, Tacoma Program Center or the location of a course lecture, field trip or seminar.

  14. Printer-friendly Roster Page with Contact Info for Leaders SD319

In preparing for an activity, leaders often want to bring a long a printout of their activity roster, including participant names, mobile phone, email, and emergency contact info. Currently we have to export this info to excel and spend time removing unnecessary columns and rows and doing a lot of formatting to produce this. Offer a printer-friendly page that formats this info (and leaves out the unnecessary info like cancelled registrations, etc.).

  15. Create More Robust Safety Committee Data Analysis SD52/465/466

Currently, participants submit incident reports to the Safety Committee, which then compiles the data and looks for trends in the aggregate (it does a lot more than that as well, but this aspect of its work is onerous). If we connected incident reporting with routes/places and even illustrated on a map, committees could analyze trends and information much more rapidly and wouldn't have to wait for Safety Committee reports. Safety Committee efforts could then be more available for training and prevention work now that the data crunching burden has been reduced. Members and Leaders could then have information about incident…

  16. MailTo button on Rosters and other web email improvements GH1123

The email button on the roster page is pretty much useless because of the crippled form based email that is built in. Add another button with a MailTo link behind it that feeds the default email client with the list of selected email address in the header.

That's basically the same functionality we had under IMIS--it was robust, immensely useful, and the necessary programming is trivial.

We added a MailTo box that allows copy-and-paste of email addresses to a personal email client and up to threes attachment for web-sent email.

  17. Make it possible for website to process multiple payments for trips like Global Adventures and Youth Programs

Make it possible for deposits to be taken and then remaining balance paid through the website.

User Story: As a parent registering my child for a youth program, allow me to choose to pay the full amount, or automatically pay in equal monthly installments from this month through the last month of the program with a credit card so that staff need not keep credit card info on file (security risk) and process these cards manually every month.

Note: Though specifically requested for our youth programs, this payment system could be used for any program of sufficient length and cost.

  20. The doors are closed to most of us.

Publish lists of truly open events where organizers are not micromanaging who can attend. The list will be incredibly short. Others have commented on this and per usual someone with 'official authority' to do so deleted their thoughts and suggestions. This is absurd, rude, and asinine. The arrogance demonstrated is remarkable. The issue stands. There are painfully few outings available (particularly for Basic Climbing Grads) to participate in. This does not feel like a club at all, but a set of tight cliques that are energetically guarded.

    Hi Douglas,

You are not alone in your frustration about the limited number of climbs for basic grads. In fact I’d encourage you to read this thread and comment on it which discusses this same issue so you can better understand the climb leader’s perspective as well

    http://feedback.mountaineers.org/forums/272594-leaders/suggestions/6939679-future-activity-sign-up-dates-modifying-registrat

I am closing this feedback item because we are trying to make sure their aren’t duplicates of the same item. The issue you brought up is incredibly important and was actually discussed recently by the managing committee.

The Managing Committee met on April 30, 2015 and decided to take no action on the issue right now. Central issues that contribute to these frustrations that they identified were a shortage of leaders and the various legitimate needs for pre-filling a roster that should not be disrupted. However, they decided that working on increasing the leader base and monitoring frustrations related to this issue…
