Roster visibility change on the web site
Some of us are wondering about a recent change on the web site. Activity rosters are no longer visible unless we're registered for that activity. Instead of displaying the roster, the web site now displays this text: " You must be registered for this activity to see the participants".
This obviously enhances privacy for those members who wish it, but it also reduces visibility for those members who use the visibility to hang out together on Mountaineers activities.
As you know, members already have the ability to mark their own profiles as private.
I'm wondering if this privacy setting could be factored into this policy change, i.e. Mountaineers members who have chosen to make their profile public could be visible on the rosters, and those who choose to have private profiles could show up as anonymous.
For most people, when they're deciding what they'll do on the weekend, the people they're doing it with is an important part of the decision.

I found access to the hike roster very helpful in deciding if a hike, backpack, snowshoe would be suitable for me. If I knew another participant and could therefore better gage pace, hiking style, it was often enough to get me to sign-up. A good tool to enhance the experience and connectivity to fellow hikers/backpackers.

I, too, would love to have the visibility of the roster returned. It helps me a great deal to gauge whether my pace will be appropriate for a hike or backpack if I know others on the trip who I can keep up with. While I know it's up to the trip leader to manage the pace on trail, if I've signed up for an outing with a group of people who would be able to move faster, then I'd be slowing everyone down and I don't want to be the one to do that when I could potentially go find another trip with a group I'm more suited to. Then everyone's happy.

The other issue I forgot to mention is car pooling. Nice to see the roster and who to possible car pool with prior to signing up.

I agree with this. I like to see who is on the hike or backpack to gauge myself against the group. Or if I am trying to hang out with my mountaineer friends nice to see before signing up. I am afraid what will happen is people will sign up to see who is hiking then cancel if they feel the group is not in their comfort zone or the people they were looking to hike with aren't on the roster. This could cause a nightmare. I think this is very important for backpacks and CHS.

Yes. I agree with Deepak. Social connections is one of the main reasons I joined the Mountaineers. As a new member who is trying to find hiking buddies, this change makes it much harder to connect with folks I would like to hike with and who I know hike at the same level.
