This forum is for you to share ideas and exchange feedback with Mountaineers members, guests, volunteers, and leadership. You may vote for or comment on any idea and will be notified of its status changes. Your feedback helps us prioritize projects and improvements for our organization.

We receive lots of great ideas, so please search the forum before adding a new one. If your idea is not yet in our forum, please post it with a simple title and an explanation, and how it could benefit The Mountaineers. Please note that all our courses, events, trips, course-related activities, clinics, seminars, and lodge stays have forms for you to give feedback when you participate. You’ll get an email reminder to do so just after the activity. If your feedback is of urgent nature it may be best to contact the chair of the committee that sponsors that program directly. If there was a safety incident or near miss, you will have the opportunity for submitting an Incident Report after submitting activity feedback.   2. Auto-populate branch council rosters with all chairs of branch activity committees

    There are some times when a branch council roster isn't updated after a new chair comes on to an activity committee. If this wasn't a difficult or expensive feature, it would alleviate one bit of data entry for branch council's AND help prevent other committees from missing communications from the councils.

  3. Improve the Summary (aka Search Results) View for Files GH1902

  4. Profile - improved clarity to user re what shows as public or private? GH1974

    Might there be a better interface re our profiles that would make crystal clear to the user what information is kept private and what is viewable to Mountaineer members (public)?

    **Update: Also would be good for leaders to be able to discern which members want their info private versus shared with our members. This means looking at how rosters show up for courses, activities and events for both participants and leaders.

  5. Course feedback form should request that students name their instructor

    Course feedback form should request that students name their instructor so we can learn from the good instructors and help the poor ones. Currently the comments are lumped together. Comments like "my instructor was great" and "my instructor was poor", don't do us any good because we don't know who they are talking about.

    The course related field trip surveys now include the following text to help identify which instructors may need additional support. “Could you give the reasons why you rated the instructors the way you did?
    Please list specific names of instructors if possible so we can pass on the feedback.”

  6. Fully integrated Roster Management for Courses with multiple activities, and sections to complete to graduate.

    Currently for a Course with multiple required activities one must download multiple CSV files and have the skill to basically develop a one time database and queries to track all students and who has completed what.

    It would seem like the software provide would have reporting capabilities and modules that could be user facing to avoid this by using the source database.

    We already have the desired functionality. There are “Review” links to everyone’s name on the course roster. Visit https://www.mountaineers.org/volunteers/leader-resources/schedule-a-course-clinic-or-seminar/schedule-a-course-clinic-or-seminar#manage-rosters to learn more.

    If there is concern about all students registering for required field trips, be sure that all course activities are listed and open for registration when the course opens for registration. This way participants are prompted to choose activities when they register before getting to the checkout page.

  7. Online outdoor resume

    I think that breaking down the various skills our courses teach is important and reiterate my support for "skill badges" that is already an idea in this system. However, I see benefit in creating a template that is populated with the skills a member has earned that takes the form of an outdoor resume people could download and modify. This could promote our efforts to make the burgeoning multi-billion-dollar outdoor industry accessible to the youth we serve (as well as help our members who are sick and tired of their current jobs and would love to make a career transition).…

  8. Warning message for unrelated activity types tagged on activity listing GH1867

    When setting up a trip, the trip defaults to the multiple activity types associated with the route/place. It would be nice if the site gave you a “warning” if you set up a trip with activity types that are different from the committee listing the trip or the activity template chosen to avoid having a ski trip show up in snowshoe and scramble trip listings.

    We set the default activity type to come from the activity template only when scheduling an activity, and allow the leader to choose or edit the Climbing, Skiing, or Snowshoe categories when scheduling an activity. We also improved the display of activity type and categories on Routes & Places and Activities.

  9. Make the course application hyperlink text into a more prominent blue button GH2176

    Currently, there is tiny hyperlink text above the register button for a course for a person to submit an online application. I would like to see that as a prominent blue button above the yellow register button. The hyperlink text just doesn't jump out.

  10. Three day head start for basic students who don't yet have 3 climbs

    Good afternoon Jeff,

    Jim Nelson asked that I get in contact with you about a website feature we would like to explore in support of the Basic Climbing Course. We would like for the website to be able to flag Basic Course students who have not yet completed three climbs and give them a three-day head start in signing up for Basic climbs. As soon as a student has three successful climbs, the flag comes off and they have the same priority in signing up for climbs as prior-year Basic course graduates.

    Hi Climbers,

    Thanks for posting your suggestions on the feedback site. This has been an issue for many years, and this is not a problem with a technology solution – at least not right now (take a look at another Feedback idea with a healthy number of votes in opposition to pre-filling rosters before a trip is posted- http://feedback.mountaineers.org/forums/272594-leaders/suggestions/6939679-future-activity-sign-up-dates-modifying-registrat).

    Every option proposed has implications for every activity across the entire organization. If we allow trip rosters to be filled with students, we limit the availability of roster spots for course graduates like basic climbing students (who will leave The Mountaineers when climbs aren’t available to them). Whether we decide to favor students over general membership is a policy decision that needs to be made at a higher level in the organization, not by staff or a single committee.   12. Allow a course to have multiple course types GH1640

    I'd like to be able to list a course under two categories. For example Winter Travel for Everett was snowshoeing and cross country skiing so should be able to be listed under both. Scramble leader seminars or hike leader seminars ideally should get an outdoor leadership and the activity type tag

    Courses now can have multiple course types. THis lives in the course template and is particularly useful for courses like winter travel that need to be earmarked as Snowshoe and Cross Country Ski or hiking and backpacking seminars that cover both activity types.

  13. Printable Membership Card GH1834

    We’ve had some feedback lately (well, always) from certain members who always want a membership card. Sending them individually is time consuming and expensive. How feasible would it be to design a page (something VERY simple) where people could print out their own membership cards?

  14. Allow activity posting while new route is pending review

    For short notice trips and to reduce frustration in posting trips, leaders should be able to post an activity for a new route/place as soon as it is requested. The current wait period for review/approval of a new route significantly discourages posting of short notice trips and adds significantly to the time requirement for posting trips.

    We cannot do this for a few reasons, mostly related to the user experience for our members and guests.

    Members would get an error message if they try to view a route/place that has not yet been edited an published. This would happen if an activity listing used an unpublished route/place.

    If we did allow Routes & Places to be published before they were reviewed, those viewing it would find them lacking vital information.

    Since launch, nearly 1,000 new Routes & Places have been added. Some of them have been quite good, but the vast majority were missing vital information and needed a significant update to be ready for our members and guests to view them.

    Also, of these new Routes & Places, more than a third of them were duplicates.

    I am not sure what we can do about the turn around time for…

  15. Add the Ability to Filter Activity Listing by Sponsoring Committee

    Currently the activity listing can only be filtered by activity type and branch, but not by the sponsoring committee. In most cases this isn't a problem because the committee is the same as the activity type, but there are a few "community" committees, Retired Rovers, 20-30s Somethings, Singles. With the current system trips sponsored by these committees are basically impossible to find. The audience filters would work great for this, except that any trip can pick any of them, so most trips pick more than one.

    We had a separate instructor feedback form for course listings only and now we have a separate form for instructors at field trips rather than the same form as participants.

    We are now gathering info about whether leaders felt prepared for their role in addition to the regular safety and curriculum feedback info.

  17. Student Enrollment Notifications for Leaders GH1869

    Would like to request the ability to have notifications sent to leaders when students enroll in a course. This is particularly important for some of the ongoing course listings like Naturalist Study Group.

    When you set up or edit a course, you can no request that notifications for roster changes (e.g. student registers, cancels or moves from waitlist), by checking the box for this.

  18. Display trail or route on route/place map GH2019

    While it would be a lot of work to populate initially, the question was raised at our committee meeting whether the map for a route/place could actually show the route, rather than just the start and end points. This could come from either a GPS track or from tracing it out on a map. Alternatively, there could be a place, like a "Materials" folder and tab for each route/place, where we could upload a GPX file with the route.

  19. Warning message to leader if other trips scheduled in that area ~Salesforce

    For routes that can have multiple trips listed... Can I suggest a website change for those locations that allow multiple registrations, to possibly have some sort of a pop-up come up informing the leader something to the effect of

    "Yeah you are the only one currently registered for this location on your activity date" or

    "hmm -- you are now the Xth user registering for this location on on your activity date; please use your judgement about whether this would work"

  20. Please stop commercial offers on this site

    Please stop presenting book offers every time I register for an activity. The big yellow "Proceed to checkout" button, and the tiny "No thanks" alternative, are particularly unsavory. This is a nature association, not a late-night TV sales channel!
