  1. Activity Seach Option: Meet Prerequisites SD640

Have an option to filter out activities you are not eligible. For example, I am a glacier travel graduate who can do certain climbs, but not all. It would be neat if I could filter out the activities that I do not have the proper badge for!

  2. Add GPS Coordinates to the Ballon Labels on Maps GH1968

On maps, add the GPS coordinates to the "bubble" that is displayed when a user clicks on a map's balloon (e.g. 46.8719090087, -121.51538770799999).

  3. Three day head start for basic students who don't yet have 3 climbs

    Good afternoon Jeff,

Jim Nelson asked that I get in contact with you about a website feature we would like to explore in support of the Basic Climbing Course. We would like for the website to be able to flag Basic Course students who have not yet completed three climbs and give them a three-day head start in signing up for Basic climbs. As soon as a student has three successful climbs, the flag comes off and they have the same priority in signing up for climbs as prior-year Basic course graduates.

This change addresses two long-simmering concerns:

    1. It gives…

    Hi Climbers,

Thanks for posting your suggestions on the feedback site. This has been an issue for many years, and this is not a problem with a technology solution – at least not right now (take a look at another Feedback idea with a healthy number of votes in opposition to pre-filling rosters before a trip is posted- http://feedback.mountaineers.org/forums/272594-leaders/suggestions/6939679-future-activity-sign-up-dates-modifying-registrat).

Every option proposed has implications for every activity across the entire organization. If we allow trip rosters to be filled with students, we limit the availability of roster spots for course graduates like basic climbing students (who will leave The Mountaineers when climbs aren’t available to them). Whether we decide to favor students over general membership is a policy decision that needs to be made at a higher level in the organization, not by staff or a single committee. Because website/technology solutions apply to every activity we offer we need…

  4. Allow activity posting while new route is pending review

For short notice trips and to reduce frustration in posting trips, leaders should be able to post an activity for a new route/place as soon as it is requested. The current wait period for review/approval of a new route significantly discourages posting of short notice trips and adds significantly to the time requirement for posting trips.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Will!

We cannot do this for a few reasons, mostly related to the user experience for our members and guests.

Members would get an error message if they try to view a route/place that has not yet been edited an published. This would happen if an activity listing used an unpublished route/place.

If we did allow Routes & Places to be published before they were reviewed, those viewing it would find them lacking vital information.

Since launch, nearly 1,000 new Routes & Places have been added. Some of them have been quite good, but the vast majority were missing vital information and needed a significant update to be ready for our members and guests to view them.

Also, of these new Routes & Places, more than a third of them were duplicates.

I am not sure what we can do about the turn around time for…

  5. Display trail or route on route/place map GH2019

While it would be a lot of work to populate initially, the question was raised at our committee meeting whether the map for a route/place could actually show the route, rather than just the start and end points. This could come from either a GPS track or from tracing it out on a map. Alternatively, there could be a place, like a "Materials" folder and tab for each route/place, where we could upload a GPX file with the route.

  6. Warning message to leader if other trips scheduled in that area ~Salesforce

For routes that can have multiple trips listed... Can I suggest a website change for those locations that allow multiple registrations, to possibly have some sort of a pop-up come up informing the leader something to the effect of

"Yeah you are the only one currently registered for this location on your activity date" or

"hmm -- you are now the Xth user registering for this location on on your activity date; please use your judgement about whether this would work"

  7. Allow Map Displayed on Activity Route/Place Tab to be Edited GH1870

Allow leaders to edit the GPS Start Point and GPS End Point (or the map in whatever form it exists) that is displayed on the "Route/Place" tab on the Activity pages.

This will make the map displayed with the activity more accurate for the trip itinerary.

  8. Add a new Activity category called "Other".

This could be a catch-all spot for new ideas that don't yet fit an established category. A good example is the Olympia Branch Gear Swap. It is desirable to run it as an Activity because: 1. The intent is to have sellers register and pay for tables. and 2. Folks have now been trained/accustomed to searching activities for things to do. Given the creative, entrepreneurial nature of members and branches, new ideas do come along and need an outlet, rather than be discouraged just because they are a square peg. Over time, examples that had persistence would become candidates for…

For items like your Gear Swap, the proper category is an Event. Events can be set up to have people rsvp for a table or to simply attend. If we want to collect money connected to events we currently use Eventbrite. Event listings allow us to post the event in multiple calendars. Events can be easily downloaded to your personal calendar, and offer complete customization. We want to be able to market these cool new ideas and event listings allow you to have titles and text and photos how you want them rather than being stifled by the activity template listings.

Activity templates do not have the same functionality as they include leader’s notes, mileage, etc. Trip specific categories don’t make sense for an event like the gear grab. The Event category also allows members to register guests without having to create a separate profile for a guest or have…

  10. Add cancelation date range

    Issue:

I'm a trip leader. A couple days before a trip I don't want anyone new signing up for planning/logistics reasons. The solution for that is to have signup close a couple days early. But then people signed up can't cancel from my trip without emailing me and having me do it (or the Program Center do it), which is a pain for me to do. Since someone can't be signed up for 2 trips at the same time, they might need me to cancel them ASAP so they can sign up for another trip, but I might not be…

We definitely understand where this idea is coming from but at this point we must decline the idea for the following reasons. 1) We had many leaders from across the organization request manually roster manipulation after registration has closed and this is in contradiction to that widespread request. 2) We are concerned that this is too complicated for our members and leaders since Member Services already spends a decent amount of time explaining what registration open and close dates are and how they work and this idea makes the process a little harder to remember.

  11. Show leader permission required even if registration isn't open GH1498

Show if leader permission is required on the activity page before registration opens. Currently if registration is not open yet, the activity page says when registration will open but does not mention if leader permission is required or not. It's frustrating to wait until the day registration opens and then discover that you need to have emailed the leader first.

Leader permission now shows before registration is open so you can be prepared to email the leader.

  12. Add Title Choices to Routes & Places for Use with Activities GH1476

To make it easier to better title activities where the route place has broadly varying options and alternatives, provide a list of alternate location names that may be used.

Specifically, when scheduling an activity allow the leader to choose an alternate title from an "Alternate Route/Place Title" list that is populated from a route/place "Route/Place Titles for Activity Titles" list.

    Here's an example:

For a scramble of "Silver, Tinkham & Abiel Peaks," https://www.mountaineers.org/explore/routes-places/silver-tinkham-abiel-peaks, the activity title currently is and by default after implementing this idea would be:

Alpine Scramble - Silver, Tinkham & Abiel Peaks

    Alternate activity titles with…

We now have the ability to have alternate titles for routes/places that have a couple different destinations but all use the same access and thus we wouldn’t want two different Mountaineers groups there on the same day.

An example is Snow & Gem Lakes. This trip can now simply be titled Gem Lake or Snow & Gem Lakes. Or if you are only climbing Tinkham and Silver Peaks you can now pick just those two peaks even though the listing has Silver, Abiel & Tinkham Peaks.

The ability to switch to an alternate title is in the Route/Place tab when you are in the activity edit form while scheduling or editing an activity. It’s the same place you’d edit the date or choose a new route/place for the activity.

Please note that this alternate title is not supposed to replace the summary. For example the title is not Gem Lake…

  13. The doors are closed to most of us.

Publish lists of truly open events where organizers are not micromanaging who can attend. The list will be incredibly short. Others have commented on this and per usual someone with 'official authority' to do so deleted their thoughts and suggestions. This is absurd, rude, and asinine. The arrogance demonstrated is remarkable. The issue stands. There are painfully few outings available (particularly for Basic Climbing Grads) to participate in. This does not feel like a club at all, but a set of tight cliques that are energetically guarded.

    Hi Douglas,

You are not alone in your frustration about the limited number of climbs for basic grads. In fact I’d encourage you to read this thread and comment on it which discusses this same issue so you can better understand the climb leader’s perspective as well

    http://feedback.mountaineers.org/forums/272594-leaders/suggestions/6939679-future-activity-sign-up-dates-modifying-registrat

I am closing this feedback item because we are trying to make sure their aren’t duplicates of the same item. The issue you brought up is incredibly important and was actually discussed recently by the managing committee.

The Managing Committee met on April 30, 2015 and decided to take no action on the issue right now. Central issues that contribute to these frustrations that they identified were a shortage of leaders and the various legitimate needs for pre-filling a roster that should not be disrupted. However, they decided that working on increasing the leader base and monitoring frustrations related to this issue…

  14. Develop functionality for Activity Programs and Outings/Combos SD154/GH1639

This is functionality would be much like what we have for courses and would be for activity programs like Explorers and Venturing Crew, activity outings like Yosemite Climbing and "combo" activities like Hike & Stewardship and Cathedral Rock & Mount Daniel. We need to be able to group a few activities (and maybe a couple lodge stays) under one "umbrella" Outing and use a "manage registration" style feature to register for them and the Outing as a whole like we do for courses.

  15. Display activity start time next to date

Display an activity start time prominently along with the date, and as a mandatory field. It wastes time to go through several screens only to see that no time is listed, or the start time won't work for your personal schedule.

The current meeting time and place field is rich text to allow leaders to explain start times. For example, sometimes a leader puts in both start time at trailhead and where and when they are meeting at a park and ride.

Our leaders requested this flexibility so it would be a pretty big change to switch this to being a single field or adding another field that leaders need to complete is not practical.
  16. Option for "Closed" vs "Open" Activities

There needs to be a better way to handle closed activity sign-ups such as SIG-only outings. When hunting for activities, it is frustrating how many of the outings are actually closed events for a set group of people and not open to the public. Surely there's a way to remove these closed events from the publicly searchable activities board.

  17. Add a show activities from the past check mark box on courses

It would be cool if the Course Requirements tab on the course detail page page included a checkbox labeled “X Show activities from the past” and/or maybe a date range for activities that would be displayed.

We can now enable faceted search for course “Activities” folders to allow course administrators to more quickly find particular course activities and more easily manage their courses.

Please send an email to info@mountaineers.org if you’d like this feature enabled on any of your course’s “Activities” folders.

  18. Fix message in blue roster tab

When you aren't listed as a participant for a leader or a trip it currently says Log in to see roster even if you are logged in. We need the text to say "Only participants of the trip can view other members on the roster. "

  20. Eliminate or change the SK ratings for Sea Kayak Route/Places

From the 2/7/15 Sea Kayak Summit - all of the leaders from the represented branches at this summit (all branches except Kitsap and Bellingham) agreed that SK ratings for a route/place (NOT an "Activity") was of limited usefulness. Many agreed with the suggestion of changing the route/place rating to something more general such as "beginner, moderate," or other phrases that referred to the amount of POTENTIAL exposure, but did not purport to address all of the varying conditions that could occur at different times and in different weather.
