This forum is for you to share ideas and exchange feedback with Mountaineers members, guests, volunteers, and leadership. You may vote for or comment on any forum idea and will be notified of status changes to that idea. Your feedback helps us prioritize projects and improvements for our organization. You’ll get an email reminder to do so just after the activity. If your feedback is of urgent nature it may be best to contact the chair of the committee that sponsors that program directly.   1. Improve more+ button

    From feedback, it appears that many people fail to notice the "more+" button in activities, especially on cellphones. Because they don't see it, they don't read all the important info in leader's notes. The More+ button should be more prominent...possibly a brighter, solid color button? Better yet, how about all the info about the trip expanded so it's never missed?

  2. In addition to Leave no Trace consider As an Outdoor Ambassador, removing traces left by others

    Not unusual to see some trash on the trail or campsite. Be a good steward, pick it up and pack it out. Consider always carrying a trash bag in your pack for this. It often only takes a few seconds to pick it up. Help keep the outdoors pristine! :)

    Thanks for sharing your idea. We agree that people should be good stewards of our natural places. In addition to sharing the principles of Leave No Trace as part of our Outdoor Ambassador program, we also regularly share responsible recreation tips with our community on our website, in our emails, and on social media. Most of our courses teach the “campsite rule”, to leave a place better than you found it, and many of our course students are required to complete eight hours of stewardship credit to graduate.   3. On daily alert, display the day of the week GH3076/3077

    The new Daily alert feature is nice, but it would be more helpful if it displayed the day of the week in the message. Most people are available only on certain days.

  4. Email Reminder for Activities, Courses and Events About to Open for Registration SD509

    As a site user, allow me to choose to get an email the day before an activity, course or event opens so that I get a reminder to register for an activity or course for which I plan to register.

    It would be ideal to add a checkbox along with "Send me an email reminder the day before this opens for registration." to the registration portlet where the the opening date is displayed. We're currently thinking a new role on the roster may be the best way to accomplish this.

  5. Allow leaders to update a student's participation notes after a field trip is closed

    Leaders add participation notes to a student's profile if they fail to pass a critical skill and need reevaluation before they can register for a climb. We need to be able to update the participation note to include information when they do pass the skill, but this means we can't close the activity until all students have passed, unless we contact the program center to reopen. It would be nice if we could update participation notes.

    We close activities so that we know that the records are up-to-date and to prevent accidentally editing an activity that is complete. An activity that was closed can be re-opened by staff or a committee admin if corrections are needed.

    If a student fails to meet one or more standards at a field trip and needs to attend a make-up session after practicing and improving, their successful completion should be recorded on the make-up session activity. This is so that we can see a student’s progress over time.

  6. Trips should not show as 'full' just because someone is on the waitlist

    When someone has asked to be put on the waitlist but there is still room on the main roster, the trip still looks like it is full on the summary listings. The summary listings page should show the number of roster spaces as well as the number of people on the waitlist.

    This can only happen for activities and courses where there is a fee. We automated the waitlist-to-roster functionality for activities and courses that are free (i.e. if a leader adds a person with the “waitlisted” status and there is space for them to be “registered,” the person being added is automatically changed to “registered” when the record is saved). And the definition of a waitlist is list of people who want to participate if space becomes available, so there should never be anyone on a waitlist if there is space on the activity or course for them.

    We considered automating automated the waitlist-to-roster functionality for activities and courses with a fee, but decided not to, because the fee adds some nuances, chief among them is an accidental cancellation request.     It would help if when the leader enters a Routes and Places title that was previously a designated trail in planning a future trip if it clearly shows this trail is still included under a different route/place name

    We already have this capability. Thee are two places where we can indicate alternate titles, the Summary and the Title tab. Examples of each of these to this suggestion form Mount Olympus/Blue Glacier, https://www.mountaineers.org/activities/routes-places/mount-olympus-blue-glacier.

    Also, the text in the Summary field and the titles in the Titles tab are indexed and used to rank results high in search results, so it should be easy to find Routes & Places by any of its alternate titles or words from the Summary.

    If there are specific Routes & Places where we need to improve the Summary to indicate all of the options and variations for a route, or we need to add titles to the alternate titles list, please use the Route/Place Updates, Images & Resources Form, https://www.mountaineers.org/activities/route-place-updates-images-resources.

  8. Include all fields in the CSV download after an activity closes GH2929

    As an admin or a leader, I would like to see all fields in the CSV download so that I can better manage courses and activities. Also reorder the fields so that like information is grouped.

  10. Participant Note Types

    Participant Note Types:

    Enhance participant notes capability so that users with the ability to add participant notes may select from a range of pre-determined “note types” (still to be determined, but could include “positive comment, future leader potential, conditioning issue, behavior issue, other comment”) when entering participant notes in addition to entering free text notes. Note types as well as free text become a part of a member’s profile.

  11. Change map when destination is changed GH2018

    When a trip leader changes the destination [route/place] for an existing trip [activity], the map coordinates [GPS Start and End points] don't change. They should probably change to the new destination [route/place].

    [I think we also missed high point when adding and editing an activity. We should add that too when we do this.]

  12. Add activity templates to accomodate seasonal variations for climbing

    When we transition to skill badges as pre-requisites for trips I'd like to be able to modify the default pre-req badges on the activity I list depending on the season. For example if I lead a trip to the tooth in June I want it to have all of the regular basic alpine skills like snow travel, belay etc but in August I want to be able to remove the snow travel skill pre-requisite or have a template that brings up a different set of requirements.

    This will require committee buy-in, update of our activity standards, and adequate explanation so leaders an participants understand them.

  13. When a leader sets a trip to 'private' status, turn off visibility to leaders

    Sometimes a committee administrator has time to create multiple listings in advance on behalf of leaders but doesn't want them to be visible to anyone until the trip opens for registration, so they set them to 'private' for a few days or weeks. Particularly the case for Global Adventures but also for some course field trips. However right now all listings are visible to any leader even when marked private. The whole point of marking something private is so that no one gets the advantage of advance visibility for that activity. Can we make any 'private' status activity be invisible…

    We allow leaders to see private activities because they need to see all activities at a given route/place to prevent multiple groups going to the same place. This obviously applies mostly to global adventures and we understand the need to have limited visibility but it’s hard to justify the resources needed for development for a specific activity committee at this time.

  14. Summit register at Mount Olympus Middle Peak

    Need to make the Mountaineers summit register at Mount Olympus Middle Peak watertight and bring a register to put in it next time someone goes up there. I looked in it a few days ago. A few soaked scraps of paper is all that is in there. It is the first Mountaineers summit register container I have seen on any peak. Maybe this has some historical value? Will email a photo of it.

    Hi Jerry,

    We’ve added a note on the Mt. Olympus route/place listing that the middle summit is missing a register and that registers are available at the Seattle Program Center.

    We are also able to mail paper registers to people who aren’t able to stop by the program center and have their own summit tupperware or other watertight container. Email info@mountaineers.org if you have a summit attempt booked and want a register.

  16. Have leader's permission emails indicate whether assistant leader or participant

    As a trip leader it'd would be nice if the permission request emails specify in the subject whether the request is for a participant or an assistant leader. This way the leader could handle emails differently, i.e. use different email rules, or simply, trying to make sure they have enough leaders earlier than accepting participants. Maybe a drop-down for the type of request or separate links would be a solution - i.e., "click here to request permission as participant" and "click here to request permission as leader"

    It was easy enough to add a question to the request, there does not seem to be any downside, and there are a few activity types where assistant leaders register themselves, so this is done.

  17. Make it so the alpine scramble template can't be chosen during the winter months

    During the winter months, roughly October 15 - April 15, we require that trips must be listed as "Winter Scramble" rather than "Alpine Scramble", this is because different badges are required for scrambling during the winter months. Unfortunately, from time-to-time a leader accidentally lists the trip as Alpine Scramble, allowing people to register who should not be qualified.

    Is there any way to prevent the listing of "Alpine Scramble" trips during winter months, so only the "Winter Scramble" is allowed?

    We re-ordered the activity templates in the activity scheduling process drop down, so “Alpine Scrambling” and “Winter Scramble” are next to each other, so leaders can easily choose the correct template.

    Winter scrambles are conditions and weather dependent so a fixed set of dates is not as flexible as this.

  18. Add Email Notification for Comments SD642

    Make it so comments on trip reports, blog posts, etc. send an email to the person who posted the trip report so they can respond and have a dialogue about conditions. We'll also need a way to opt out of this email.

    Note: If the commenter shared their profile their name is a link that will provide their email address.

  19. Make it possible to use the cursor keys within all text fields when creating or editing an activity.

    When setting up and/or editing an activity, it is possible to move the cursor about inside the "Summary" filed but not in the "Meeting Place and Time" and "Required Equipment" fields. As a result, it is very frustrating to enter or correct information in the online activity form.

    In other words, when pressing the ⬅️➡️⬆️or ⬇️ keys on my keyboard, the cursor will move accordingly inside the text field "Summary" as one would expect with a normal word processing function.

    But in the "Meeting Place and Time" and "Required Equipment" fields, pressing these same ⬅️➡️⬆️or ⬇️ keyboard cursor control keys…

    Last fall, we upgrade our rich text field editing interface. Hopefully, that and perhaps some Apple iOS updates have fixed this issue. If not, please send an email to info@mountaineers.org and we’ll take another look.

  20. Disconnect the <Enter> key from Submit on the Routes & Placed Edit Form

    Disconnect the <Enter> key from the "Submit" button on the Routes & Places edit form. It is a big form with lots of things to be filled in and lots of causes for pressing <Enter> before one is ready. On the other hand, one is still able to edit afterwards so accidental submission was not a big problem.
