General Feedback

This forum is for you to share ideas and exchange feedback with Mountaineers members, guests, volunteers, and leadership. You may vote for or comment on any forum idea and will be notified of status changes to that idea. Your feedback helps us prioritize projects and improvements for our organization. We receive lots of great ideas, so please search the forum first before adding a new one. If your idea is not yet in our forum, please post it with a simple title and an explanation of your idea and how it benefits The Mountaineers. If you want to learn more about what has already been developed and what is up next, please visit our Technology Blog. Thank you for your participation!

Please note that all our courses, events, trips and course-related activities have feedback forms so that you give feedback for every activity in which you participate. You’ll get an email reminder to do so just after the activity. If your feedback is of urgent nature it may be best to contact the chair of the committee that sponsors that program directly. Not sure who the chair is? Contact our Member Services Team at info@mountaineers.org.

If there was a safety incident or near miss, you will have the opportunity for submitting an Incident Report after submitting activity feedback. You may also use the Incident Report button on the activity detail page (from your My Activities page) or contact our Safety Committee directly at safety@mountaineers.org.

If you reached this site wanting to report problem behavior by another member or harassment. Please submit a Behavioral Complaint Form.

  1. Mileage and Elevation Gain modifications GH1474

Although Leaders can change the mileage and elevation of a trip they took instead of using the default route/place data, they currently have to do this by editing the "activity." It would be one-step easier if this was possible on the same page as when you "close out" the activity. Can we duplicate that data input there as well as in the activity template?

You may now update the mileage and elevation gain when closing an activity in addition to the trip results, participant results and volunteer hours. We also improved the instructions on the roster page, so it shoudl be much clearer how to close an activity.

  2. Still Logged In as a Zope User GH1096

A few folks have received a "Still Logged is as Zope User" message when logging out of the website. Please let us know if you are one of them. Thanks!

Here is info that would be helpful to us if you experience this issue:

    • What device are you using (brand, model, etc.)

    • What browser and operating system you are using.

    • Was there anything odd about when you logged in?

    • From where did you log in (e.g. following a link in an email or bookmark/favorite that required log in or navigation directly to mountaineers.org.)?

    • What page were you on when you…

  3. Schedule quarterly meetings of all hiking committee leaders to coordinate the scheduling of hikes to match demonstrated demand. .

We need to avoid both too few and too many hikes of the same type, to avoid both long waiting lists and the need to cancel for lack of signup.

  4. When regional chairs offer to help a member with something, follow through!

I have a road trip to Zion coming up and would have liked to post as global activity. I have been a member for only one year so was unable to post. Tacoma Branch Chair offered to help any way he could and though I reached out twice, I received no follow through. Suggest:
    1. Changing rules for activity posts so those who have experience and good activities can communicate to others who may be interested in participating.
    2. If you are a in a lead position (regional chair) and offer your assistance, follow through to your membership community. It…

  6. Measure what we care about at the member, committee, and branch levels. SD317

There are a number of statistical and reporting needs and desires that many people spend a great deal of time trying to capture. I would like to see us develop metrics and create "dashboards" that automate this data collection and allow us to quickly identify trends in the data that help us plan for the most successful future. For example:

Branches and Committees often want to know (or would be interested in): # of Leaders, # of trips being posted, % of closed out trips, #of courses offered, # of students in courses, # of participants on trips sponsored by…

    Completed Final Part Jun 2018

The final piece we want to have available is aggregate committee leader feedback. This feedback allows committee admins to enter an activity or course start date and see all feedback for that outing in one place. It also allows committee admins to quickly see Leader feedback in one place.

We currently have monthly dashboards being sent to each branch with information about the number of trips, courses and membership information.

We also have the member services team pulling trip statistics and additional committee reporting via requests to info@mountaineers.org. We strive for a 48 business hour turnaround on these requests.

  7. Add a short piece of text clarifying instructor sign up is always open GH1055

Add a short piece of text indicating that instructors can register at any time for field trips on the field trip listing or near register portal

Text now shows on the course listing and in the “Find Instructor Opportunities” faceted search showing when reg opens to public and that instructor registration is open now.

  8. Add warning message for leader if they are double booking themselves GH1116

Add a warning message for leaders that have a conflict with an activity they are adding at the point of choosing the route/place and date(s).

  9. Notification to Course or Activity Leaders when someone registers GH1289

Many leaders have asked for the ability to get a notification of when someone signs up for their trip or course. At the same time, many people are feeling inundated with too many emails and would not want these added to their inbox. The ability to opt in or out of notifications like this when you set up a trip or course has been suggested so I am putting it into this forum to see how many people would like to invest time into developing a solution for this. If possible, maybe people would prefer the choice of either email…

Leaders can now request to be notified when registrants register or cancel themselves from an activity listing. This option lives on the activity Edit form on the registration tab where you normally enter registration open and close date and enter the capacity for your activity.

  10. Bring Trip Feedback Survey onto Mountaineers.org and include course surveys SD31/38

President Dan Lauren created a trip survey mechanism that operates through a different platform than Mountaineers.org but which provides invaluable information for Leaders about how their trips were viewed. It would be great to make this information easier for Leaders to see on Mountaineers.org rather than another platform with a different log-in. This could then be expanded to courses and allowing committees to analyze feedback from students efficiently through the website as well.

  11. Volunteer Recognition Badges

We have Super Volunteer and Key Leader Badges. What other ideas do you have for volunteer recognition badges? This input, combined with our current and future website abilities will help us make the best decisions as we develop ways to recognize the hard work that our volunteers do.

  12. Improve Drill Down Navigation in Left Side Bar

I waste a lot of time navigating up and down the hierarchy page-by-page. Certainly, the breadcrumbs and the navigation tree in the left side bar are a great help for more effecient navigation.

Unfortunately, the left sidebar is somewhat limited because at certain levels the expand/collapse arrows no longer work. For example, when you encounter "committees", you cannot drill down further. Instead, you must move your attention to the body of the page and choose a committee from there. Then the hierarchy in the side bar miraculously expands and you can continue drilling down from there. (Until you reach another committees…

As you noted, one can now drill down at the committee level. We cannot do this for the branch “home page” because branches requested a home page style that did NOT include the left navigation panel. You do get the lefty navigation back once you’ve gone to the Branch News, Courses & Activities or About Us page.

  13. Create Volunteering "interests and skills" checklists SD187/188/189/283/317

One of the quickest ways to match organization needs with membership talent is to identify what skills are needed and what skills potential volunteers are willing to offer. When such postings are put on the website on the "Get Involved as a Volunteer" webpage (https://www.mountaineers.org/volunteers/get-involved-as-a-volunteer), we have YET not to have someone come forward and offer to help out. If your profile page allowed you to report your interests and skills, The Mountaineers could more specifically target recruitment efforts to people who are most likely to like the work being offered. It's a fundamental part of ensuring that…

  14. Preview Activity before saving

There should be a way to preview an activity before submitting it. Currently one saves and then edits (submitted by Henry Romer during Focus Groups).

Leaders can change their trip to Private state which is a “review” state. When an activity is private it will still show up in a leader’s My Activities area but not in the search area for the general public.

We chose to make activities automatically published because that is what most leaders requested, especially because you can specify open and close registration dates. And you can always go in and edit your activity.

  15. Auto Save functionality needed for filling out online forms like Routes/places

Can we create an auto-save for some of the online forms so users can save their work on route-place and activity creation forms and come back to it later if they haven't filled all the required fields?

All required fields expect for the title and summary have default values so leaders only have to fill in a couple fields before saving.

Pro ti! If you save your route/place and you navigate away from the page you can find what you created by searching using the magnify glass search field in the top right hand corner

  16. Make land manager title a type-ahead field

Make the Land Manager field a type ahead field in Routes/places so the proper information can be entered the first time during creation.

  17. Branches and Committees self-maintain content on their pages

Allow Branches and Committees to self-maintain their pages. Committees can now maintain a brief description, but it is limited to text and cannot contain any formatting, images, links, or other useful stuff. There is currently a fairly long description for each Branch, but it is too static and, as far as I can tell, maintained by the PC. With more control of Branch page(s) on the club website, the need for Branches to have the separate websites is minimized.

Committee pages have a new look! Go check them out and start adding content to the rich text description and summary. You can also create a folder and then create a whole new webpage with extra content that you can link to . Check out Tacoma Sea Kayaking, Olympia Hiking, Everett Scrambling, Seattle climbing as examples where some content has been added. Committee admins should be able to edit and committee members can now delete and archive content. Check out the Tech 2.3 Blog on the homepage for more web updates. Contact member services for additional questions about updating your committee pages. Additionally there are new links on the Getting Started pages which link back to branch communities and from the Learn menu to divert people to get plugged into their branches.

  18. Events calendar: Display pending events to admins

calendar: Allow admins to see events that are pending. State seems to only show published events. It is very difficult to find an event once it has been submitted for review.

I just did some investigating and it doesn’t look like there is a way to see those for easy reference but they are listed in the url if you click on the item. ie this idea is in the forum 273688 and has a unique reference number 6803077

  20. Volunteers need to be able to delete and archive content SD227/280

Should be able to remove course materials from Manage Course Materials area or get rid of course templates no longer being used or files that are not up to date.
