This forum is for you to share ideas and exchange feedback with Mountaineers members, guests, volunteers, and leadership. You may vote for or comment on any idea and will be notified of its status changes. Your feedback helps us prioritize projects and improvements for our organization.

We receive lots of great ideas, so please search the forum before adding a new one. If your idea is not yet in our forum, please post it with a simple title and an explanation, and how it could benefit The Mountaineers. Please note that all our courses, events, trips, course-related activities, clinics, seminars, and lodge stays have forms for you to give feedback when you participate. You’ll get an email reminder to do so just after the activity. If your feedback is of urgent nature it may be best to contact the chair of the committee that sponsors that program directly. If there was a safety incident or near miss, you will have the opportunity for submitting an Incident Report after submitting activity feedback.   1. Allow Members on Waitlist to sign up for Additional Outings

    The system currently does not allow members to sign up for more than one outing. If you are on a waitlist, particularly if you are third or more on that list, I think the system should allow you to also sign up for another trip as backup. It seems unfair to force members to give up a potential spot on their preferred trip only to confirm on less preferred trip simply because of the system. Thank you.

  2. Publicly accessible API

    As a member of the Mountaineers, I'd love to give back in a way that I have particular expertise.

    It would be great of the website had a public facing REST API for exposing data such as events and classes.

    At least in a read capacity. My particular goal would be to write an Android (and possibly iOS) app to browse the events and what not.

    It would be great to have easy native access to my up coming events, and be able to launch navigation to the event right from the app.

    Our Technology Advisory Committee has reviewed this topic. It is low priority because of the mobile responsive theme that we developed for our website and the concerns outlined by Eric in the comments on this idea.

  3. Lodge-specific Sign-in Sheets (aka Print Rosters) SD648/649/650

    For a two-night stay, what we have may be enough, but for longer stays a matrix-style sign-in sheet might be better. Or it may be better if we have a different printable sign-in sheet for each lodge.

  4. Beef up our route-place database to include all of the routes-places in the '100-best' books

    The system has such capacity for displaying our routes and places in an attractive and appealing way, with enough detail to know where the trailhead is and whether or not it covers the route or place that one wants to take. It seems a huge missed opportunity to let routes-places be submitted without even the most basic of descriptions other than the pure length and elevation gain, which doesn't tell us much. Yet I know that Member Services is deluged with route place requests that are so urgent that you hesitate to push back. I wonder if we might be…

    We considered a site-wide volunteer initiative to continue improve our Routes & Places and then add to them, but have no one who has expressed interest in helping yet. Please contact us at info@mountaineers.org if you would like to help.

    Remember that you can always add a new route/place and send us updates and corrections to those that exist (using the link on each route/place).

  5. Easier to see instructor opportunities: Combine instructor opportunities and add them as a filter with all other activities

    Make it easy to see instructor opportunities for courses and clinics by showing them directly in the 'find activities' page. Today, when one selects 'find activities' they see 18 types of activities including hiking, scrambling, sea kayaking. But to see course instructor opportunities one has to click on 'volunteer' --> 'volunteer with us' --> scroll halfway down to click on 'find instructor opportunities'.

    As a volunteer-led organization, it's important to make finding instructors as low-friction as possible and putting 'instructor opportunities' in the same page with all the other activities will go a long way in giving our members that…

  6. Add a Cancellation Closing Date to Lodge Stays GH2783

    Lodges need a minimum number of guests to open and must decide by Thursdays at noon whether to open for the weekend. After this point, the decision is made and to open and funds for food has been committed. But we can often handle more reservations, see we need to be able to keep reservations open longer, but prevent cancellations and refunds from being processed after the go/no go decision point.

  7. Allow Co-leaders and Mentored Leaders to be Notified of Participant Registration Changes

    We like giving the Primary Leader the option of being alerted when there is sign up activity on their hike. It would be great to offer this to Co-leaders and Mentored Leaders too.

    This is bit more complicated that it seems it should be, but we’re looking into what it will take to get it done.

    If we do this, you’ll only be able to have one co-leader and/or one mentored leader. Do you think that will be okay?

    Additionally and perhaps more importantly if you make someone who is a co-leader or mentored leader have Admin status on the roster they will be able to view Feedback for that activity. Very useful for co-leaders and mentor leaders

  8. Volunteer (instructor recruitment) request opt in GH2800

    With mega course rosters for instructor recruitment and other ways we can email people through the website it would be nice for people to have a way of opting in/out of instructor recruitment emails.

  9. Member Roles for Committee Pages

    When editing the committee roster, it would be nice if we could select/enter roles of different members so that when we check the box to display that member on the committee page, others can see those roles.

    For example, if my name shows up on the Photography Committee page, it just says "leader". It would be nice if it could say "activity coordinator and publicity" under my name. That way, visitors to the page would know to contact me for questions about those things. Limiting titles to Chair, Treasurer, Leader, etc. doesn't really tell people how we're involved.

  10. Export feature for My Activities and My Courses and Programs lists

    Add export features (to CSV or Excel) to enable members to easily export lists of Activities and Courses (historical and active/posted in the future). It could be similar to rosters Export option.

  12. Change Kitsap Branch Name to Peninsula Branch GH2736

    Long time members of the branch did not think Kitsap captured the true nature of the branch's membership, so voted to rename to Peninsula branch. I expect some increase in membership from the Olympic Peninsula, where more people will feel like this is "their" branch. I do not think this will be significant in the overall scale of membership, of which Kitsap is a small part.

  13. Show "Late Cancellation" as a Participant Result

    Show "Late Cancellation" as a status on the Participant Result, if participant cancels after registration is closed. This would be an additional option to Cancelled and No Show, which already exist. No changes to existing, automated emails.

    We have a number of mechanisms in place to help people understand the impact of cancellations and no- shows. This includes our automated emails and participation notes for people on trips.

    We are concerned that this status will lead to leaders blacklisting participants from trips and think that instead the focus needs to be on better new member orientation about our activities.

  14. Lodge Reservation Dietary Notes Improvement

    The following is from Mary Ann Cameron, a life time member of the Mountaineers. She works at Rick Steve's Europe Through the Back Door. Rich Steve's had a lot of trouble meeting the diets of their tour members so they now ask only for medical dietary restrictions. This substantially reduced their problems and they have had minimal complaints. In the paperwork you fill out when you sign up for one of his tours the only question pertaining to diet is: “

    This is a relatively easy label and/or help text change that we can do if anyone feels strongly about it.

  15. Automate updating profile URL when a member changes their name GH2910

    Automatically update profile url when a member changes their name in the system to avoid negatively impacting people (one example of a demographic that could be negatively impacted is trans folks). Right now, if a member updates their name in the system, it updates everything except URL generation automatically. The user then has to personally email someone to manually update it. It would be good if this process was automated to decrease the need for this extra step.

    There's not much need for this, because folks rarely change their name or need this. We can do these as needed and on request. If you need this, please send us an email at info@mountaineers.org. We'll do this by adding a new profile and merging it with your existing profile. You'll retain all your history, get the new name and URL, but will have to change your password.

  16. Separate Site Search Results for Images SD644

    In the site search, place all search results except images in one "tab" and images in another.

    We also have a lot of folders, especially ones titled, "Images" and "Resources," so we may want to have "tab" for folders too or rank them low in search results.

    This will help rank more important items higher in the search (e.g. a person's profile page above their profile image).

    We now hide images from search results, because we don;t have enough information about images on our website to do an adequate search.

  17. Allow Leaders to Choose Activity Template or Route/Place Image for Activities SD641

    When scheduling an activity, allow the leader to choose to use one of the the route/place images, the activity template image, or an image from their local computer.

    Notes:

    • Currently when scheduling a trip (standalone) activity, the one form the route/place is the default and the leader may choose to replace that with one from their computer. For course activities, the default image is from the activity template, and the leader may choose to replace that with one from their computer.

    • Many of our Routes & Places have an "Images" folder where we store images submitted by our members and…

  18. Ability to hide climbs for specific SIG's or Branches.

    Let climb leads be able to hide climbs from the public until they are done getting members from their SIG or branch.

    As a basic student its time consuming to see climbs just to sign up or email the climb leader and find out its only for a specific group of people and that I can't be on the climb.

  19. Ability to see 'what trips i have done with this person'

    It would be great if I could look up a person, and see the trips i've done with them in the past, along with their badges. So many times, we end up playing the 'i've been out with you somewhere. were you on my Norse Peak trip? no? may be on Snoqualmie last year then?' :)

  20. Leader's Permission Required SHOULD MEAN LEADER'S PERMISSION REQUIRED

    It's hard enough dealing with the instructors and other participants that can not or will not read and understand the posting of an activity, course, field trip, ANYTHING let alone dealing with someone that registers without getting permission to do so. What is the point of having a check box or radio button if there is no functionality behind it?
