People Search
This was spawned off from an existing thread:
https://feedback.mountaineers.org/forums/273688-general-feedback/suggestions/37230223-integrate-fuzzy-logic-to-text-search-gh2837It was clear that "fuzzy search" as implemented there did not translate into a good people search experience.
BACKGROUND
Currently, the only way to search for members (contacts) is through the sitewide search mechanism. While we have dedicated search pages for "Find Activities", "Find Routes & Places" and "Find Courses, Clinics & Seminars", we have no such dedicated page for finding members. Your options are to either find them on some roster you have access to or to rely on the sitewide search.
The problem is that the general sitewide search…

Add a "Tag" option to pages and a "Suitcase" where i can store pages i want to consult again
Like on Alltrails, WTA, etc. I'd like to be able to build my own bespoke repository of pages from the portal that i want to be able to easily access again and again -- whether it be references to how to use the portal, or blog entries, or trailheads, routes, etc.
Best would be to be able to sort them into something like sub-folders, or tag them with my own memorable tags to be able to manage them when it starts bulking up.1 vote -
Show elevation gain and distance on search page for activities
Might not be applicable for all activity types, but it would be really helpful to see some basic stats for hiking, backpacking, and scrambling without needing to click on each activity. "Difficulty" isn't consistent enough. Technical for scrambling would also be nice. It would also be very helpful to allow filtering by distance/elevation

Searchable committee minutes
We hold meetings, take minutes, and archive them. The ability to search past minutes will be very useful. In fact, I think that searching for when the committee discussed some topic - and what was decided - will be the most common way that I reference our meeting minutes.

If you have a committee or folder or anywhere else on our website within where this would be beneficial, please send an email to info@mountaineers.org.
Here are two examples of the search portlet in use:

Add MountainQueers to Search
Add MountainQueers as affinity group to green search bar, similar to how we have "Singles", "Families", etc. If possible make this an easier area to update for the future as we look to expand our affinity groups.

Integrate Spelling/Typo Correction/Suggestion into Text Search GH2953/3738
Add a feature or features that better handles misspellings and typos in text search strings. Two possibilities are: (1) a way to show potential spelling errors or typos like the red squiggly lines under such words, and/or (2) a feature like Google's "Showing results for {your corrected search string}. Search with {your original search string} instead."

Integrate Fuzzy Logic to Text Search GH2837
As a site visitor give when I submit a search with text search terms, give me search results that are "fuzzy" so that I get a better and more comprehensive list of items that meet my search criteria.
By "fuzzy" we're thinking of things like singular vs. plural (e.g. leader vs. leaders) and first names (e.g. Ben vs. Benjamin).

Add Clustering to Map Search GH2793
WTA uses a cool cluster feature on their Hike Finder Map- this would allow us to show more of our listings on the zoomed out view. https://www.wta.org/go-outside/map

Separate Site Search Results for Images SD644
In the site search, place all search results except images in one "tab" and images in another.
We also have a lot of folders, especially ones titled, "Images" and "Resources," so we may want to have "tab" for folders too or rank them low in search results.
This will help rank more important items higher in the search (e.g. a person's profile page above their profile image).
4 votesWe now hide images from search results, because we don;t have enough information about images on our website to do an adequate search.

Improve Text Search Results GH2835/2836/2913(590)
Refine the the text search results for all of the faceted searches including site search. Using threes words (W1, W2, W3) as an example, by rank ordering results in this order:
1. Phrase – W1 and W2 and W3 in that order
2. Contains all three words in any order
3. Contains W1 and W2
4. Contains W1 and W3
5. Contains W2 and W3
6. Contains W1 only
7. Contains W2 only
8. Contains W3 onlyInclude some fuzziness in search (e.g. Ben give results for Ben and Benjamin).
Consider weighting content types (e.g. Books above events).
5 votesWe missed indexing text from the Page content type, so we added that. The removed the Image content type so images will not dwarf other types of content. We determined that that the search ranking was working as desired and described here.
We’ll tackle integrating fuzziness and spelling/typos into another suggestion/project or two.
If you find that a search result you expect is not as high in the search results as you think it should be, please send an email to info @mountaineers.org with:
(1) URL from the search
(2) URL from the item that you think should be ranked higher in the search
(3) why you think this item should be ranked higher -
Add Map Area/Radius Filter to Route/Place and Activity Searches
Right now the map view of search results doesn't show if you don't have any filters chosen, because the map view has a limit on the number of records (balloons) that may be displayed. Add the ability to filter by an defined area--two corners of a rectangle or a radius around a point.
0 votesClustering is a better idea that is easier to implement and decrease the need for this approach to improving map search.

Make it possible to have org wide policies and info pages show higher in search results
Right now its impossible to search for the carpooling page in the general search because people use the word carpooling in everything. It'd be great to be able to mark certain pages and blogs that have important organization wide information to the top of the search.
2 votesThe issue here was that the “Page” content type was not indexed for searches. So this is fixed.

Search and filter hikes by vertical gain, mileage, and distance using range sliders
Search and filter hikes by vertical gain, mileage, and distance using range sliders, similar to WTA's interface.
...and allow for further filtering of results by geo using map zoom functionality, similar to that of Zillow NOTE: We already have map view, see the comments.

Search closed activities
I would like a way to search recently completed trips, so I can contact trip leaders for current route beta. This could be as simple as a checkbox on the activity search page for "Search only past/closed activities".
1 voteSam,
Thanks for the suggestion. You can use the “Starting…” section to find past activities. The “Start” and “End” dates mean "I want activities that occur between “Start Date” and “End Date.” This works for Find Activities (https://www.mountaineers.org/explore/activities) and site search (https://www.mountaineers.org/search).
Also note that our Routes & Places (https://www.mountaineers.org/explore/routes-places) have trip reports associated with them. This may be a good source of information from trips from more than just our leaders.
And of course you can search our Trip Reports (https://www.mountaineers.org/explore/trip-reports).
Thanks!
Jeff
